Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Day

Each year April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month. This April, the Colorado Rockies teamed up with Kohl’s Department Stores, The Children’s Hospital and The Kempe Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect to raise awareness about Shaken Baby Syndrome and what can be done to prevent it. April 29th was designated “Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Day at Coors Field”. Also, the Rockies aired a pre-game Public Service Announcement featuring Todd Helton, who delivered a prevention message to fans, throughout the entire month of April.

On the 29th, 3,000 water bottles with a “Keep your Cool” message were distributed to fans. In addition, the Rockies hosted a pre-game ceremony recognizing Kohl’s Department Stores for their support of the campaign as well as the professionals at The Children’s Hospital and at Kempe who dedicate themselves to protecting children.  Representatives included:

  1. Dr. J Shmerling, President & CEO - The Children’s Hospital
  2. Steve Demby, Chairman Of The Board Of Directors - The Kempe Foundation
  3. Dr. Antonia Chisea, Senior Fellow - The Kempe Child Protection Team at The Children’s Hospital
  4. Lisa Justis, Clinical Coordinator and Social Worker – The Kempe Child Protection Team at The Children’s Hospital
  5. Omar Segura, Regional Manager - Kohl’s Department Stores
  6. Mark Fleer, District Manager - Kohl’s Department Stores
  7. Doug Arnoldi, District Manager - Kohl’s Department Stores

At the conclusion of the ceremony and to kick off the ballgame, Brad Benson, Store Manager at Kohl’s Aurora East, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Campaign is designed to alert parents and caregivers about the dangers of shaking a baby and to provide education about effective prevention measures that can be taken.
